How did you decide which country/program to study abroad in?
I decided on the IES London program because I had heard amazing reviews about the program's organization and the quality of the faculty's teaching. I also had dreamed of going to London for years to see the theaters, museums, architecture, and historical sights, and was eager for the chance to immerse myself in the city for a full semester
What were you excited about and/or nervous about before your program?
I was very excited to take my classes- especially my Shakespeare course and my architecture course. I was also excited to be able to explore so many places, and know that the easy access to public transportation would make traveling much easier than it is in the U.S. While I was extremely excited, I was also nervous about meeting new people in the program and feeling homesick.
How do you think the intersections of your identities and values impacted your study abroad experience? Do you have any tips to share with future study abroad students?
I think that my identities helped me have a greater appreciation for London. For example, I felt that there were significant efforts made to make sure that women are safe on public transportation in comparison to other countries I've visited and in the U.S. I think that the diversity of the city in comparison to the rest of England makes it much more inclusive and welcoming, but I think it is still important to do research before choosing a program to make sure you'll feel safe and comfortable
Could you articulate one personal/professional/academic goal you achieved while abroad?
I achieved the personal goal of learning to navigate new and unfamiliar situations and contexts. I was able to adapt to a new schooling system, a new location, and cultural differences, which gave me more confidence in my ability to do this in the future.
What advice would you like to give to future study abroad students?
I would advise future study abroad students to give themselves time to adapt during the first few weeks. Things may feel lonely or unsettling at first, but you will eventually adjust and have some truly incredible experiences!
