How did you decide which country/program to study abroad in?
Well I’ve always had an interest in Scotland because of the beautiful highlands. When looking at all my other options, Scotland was the only one that I was really interested in that was offered during a time period I felt I could handle. I like traveling but being home is my happy place, so I picked something that was short term.
What were you excited about and/or nervous about before your program?
I was really nervous about the plane ride (it was fine) and making friends in the program. The plane was great and I made some great friends, some who I still talk to today! I was most excited to see a highland cow and the highlands in general. It was beautiful!
What was your favorite place that you traveled to or an activity you did while abroad?
Not a specific place but just walking down the streets with friends. It all felt so new and beautiful! My favorite activity though was visiting Doune Castle.
How do you think the intersections of your identities and values impacted your study abroad experience? Do you have any tips to share with future study abroad students?
I think my experience as an English major made me a lot more interested in their history. It was all super fascinating. Tip: don’t overpack! You’re gonna come back with souvenirs.
Could you articulate one personal/professional/academic goal you achieved while abroad?
My personal goal was to open up by pushing myself into a new environment. And I did! I feel more comfortable doing things I never would have done before.
What advice would you like to give to future study abroad students?
Buy your plane ticket early, so you can get it super cheap!
What do you wish you knew before you studied abroad?
I wish I knew how much easier it is than I expected. I stressed myself out so much, but it went super well!
