How did you decide which country/program to study abroad in?
I decided to do the Gender and Social Movements in the Republic of Ireland study abroad trip because of its length and the content of the class. I knew I wanted to study abroad before I graduated undergrad, but I am involved in research and academic coaching on campus and did not want to have to give up those things. Therefore, this trip was perfect for me because it did not interfere with the other activities that I was doing on campus. I also chose this program because what we were learning in the classroom aligned perfectly with what I have been studying for the past four years at IU.
What were you excited about and/or nervous about before your program?
I was extremely nervous about traveling alone because I had never done this before, especially outside the country. I had very short layovers, and I was anxious that I would not make my flights and would be stuck in an unknown area alone. At the same time, I was excited about traveling with no family or friends because it would force me out of my comfort zone, and I would meet new people.
How do you think the intersections of your identities and values impacted your study abroad experience? Do you have any tips to share with future study abroad students?
I enjoyed this study abroad trip so much because I was passionate about the content being taught. I think that gender and social movements are a part of my life all the time because I am a Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Black woman. Because of my identity, I am always a part of the fight against injustices happening to all people because no one is free until we are all free. I was able to relate to the content well because I understand the fight and experiences that many other minoritized people are going through. If I had any tips for future study abroad students, the number one tip would be to make sure you are passionate about the content you will be learning because that is how you get the most out of the trip and genuinely enjoy the study abroad opportunity.
What advice would you like to give to future study abroad students?
To future study abroad students, talk to the locals and have as much experience as possible!
