How did you decide which country/program to study abroad in?
While I never got the opportunity of meeting my late paternal grandfather, I grew up with the legends and tales of his beautiful homeland Spain. Given the unfortunate circumstance of my being not able to meet him I found that travel to his home country was the next best thing. In addition to personal motive, I found it exciting to finish my second major (Spanish) and senior semester abroad!
What was your favorite place that you traveled to or an activity you did while abroad?
While I got to study in sunny Spain, and even leave the country a couple of times, my favorite activity while abroad was walking with my host mom to the park and churro shop on Sunday mornings. Being that she was retired, we often had time to promenade, go shopping, or play a couple of card games. Her presence not only aided my eventual homesickness but also offered a lifelong connection in a wonderful country!
How do you think the intersections of your identities and values impacted your study abroad experience? Do you have any tips to share with future study abroad students?
I believe that my intersectional identities allowed for a multilayered lens into the Spanish collective. Being a Mexican-American, I offered valuable insight into the history of Spanish impact in the Americas and was able to converse with professors and students on the distinct perspectives found within history. As a woman in STEM, the medical practices abroad were of much interest to me. Having visited the hospital with my host mom allowed for interest insight into her experience with universal healthcare. A tip for future student would be to bring their authentic selves wherever they go. Representing yourself as you are is the best way to not only introduce your ideas but also to have others feel that they can genuinely share with you. .
What do you wish you knew before you studied abroad?
I wish I would have know how much extra luggage space I was going to need. As a chronic over-packer and avid shopper, I found myself purchasing an additional luggage for all my newfound tchotchke's and vintage items.
