How did you decide which country/program to study abroad in?
First, I evaluated the academic opportunities and the relevance of the program to my field of study. Second, I researched the cultural and social aspects of the country to ensure an enriching experience. Finally, I considered practical aspects such as cost, safety, and accessibility to make a well-informed decision.
What were you excited about and/or nervous about before your program?
Before my program, I was excited about immersing myself in a new culture, meeting new people, and exploring new places. However, I was also nervous about language barriers, adjusting to a different environment, and being far away from my support network. Overall, the excitement of the adventure outweighed the nerves, and it turned out to be a transformative experience.
What was your favorite place that you traveled to or an activity you did while abroad?
The most influential experience throughout this trip was our tour of the Teotihuacán pyramids. Our tour guide was extremely insightful and explained the history of Mexico’s indigenous cultures. Although I’d seen the Aztec and Mayan pyramids before (and even visited pyramids in Mexico), I further learned a lot about their spiritual practices and cultural history. For example, these pyramids were often used for spiritual ceremonies or to become closer to the gods.
Could you articulate one personal/professional/academic goal you achieved while abroad?
My biggest goal for myself was to be really open-minded and push myself to notice cultural differences, while experiencing authentic Mexican culture.
What advice would you like to give to future study abroad students?
Engage with the local culture, try new foods, and immerse yourself in the language to make the most of your study abroad experience. Expect and embrace cultural differences and be willing to adapt. Embrace new perspectives, challenge your own assumptions, and approach situations with an open mind to foster cross-cultural understanding.
