How did you decide which country/program to study abroad in?
One of my professors told us about a study abroad program he held in Sorrento, Italy that counted to my major requirements so I chose it.
What were you excited about and/or nervous about before your program?
I was very excited about the opportunity to go abroad and study with classmates and alike minds. Although I had lots of anxiety around money, traveling across the ocean, and feeling homesick.
What was your favorite place that you traveled to or an activity you did while abroad?
While abroad, one of my favorite activities I did was go on a sunset boat tour with some of the classmates I went on the trip with. I had never known these girls beforehand but we became so close, it was a wonderful experience.
How do you think the intersections of your identities and values impacted your study abroad experience? Do you have any tips to share with future study abroad students?
I believe the intersection of my identity as a white woman and my value to appreciate culture went a long way. Though I was portrayed as an obvious American, because I was so intrigued in and respectful of the culture around me I was able to both witness it from the outside as well as immerse myself in it. For future students abroad, I would tell them to take as many opportunities abroad as possible. Explore and learn as much as you can about all parts of the culture around you.
Could you articulate one personal/professional/academic goal you achieved while abroad?
I was able to step out of my comfort zone and fend for myself while abroad. Professionally, I achieved the ability to put myself in a serious situation and use my voice and opinions to curate my experience to get the most out of it. Academically, I was able to take a class in a very foreign place and get even more from it than I would imagine, I allowed myself to ask the questions I was thinking so I could actually get the answers from people in the culture themselves.
What advice would you like to give to future study abroad students?
Go and don't look back! Apply for scholarships. Make sure you are not sitting in your room. Make friends with locals and find places that have meaning and try to understand the meaning.
