How did you decide which country/program to study abroad in?
I decided to study abroad in Madrid for a few different reasons. UC3M offered a greater number of courses that I needed and would ultimately transfer back to IU. I also thought Spanish culture would be very interesting to experience. Finally, I already speak Spanish and thought it would be easiest to go somewhere with a language I was familiar with.
What were you excited about and/or nervous about before your program?
I was excited to experience a new culture and travel around Europe. I was a bit nervous in regards to the classes. I wasn’t sure what to expect and quickly realized that school in Spain is a bit different than in the US.
What was your favorite place that you traveled to or an activity you did while abroad?
My favorite place I traveled to was either Amsterdam or Lake Annecy, France. Amsterdam was a great place to visit in the summer with a lot to do. Lake Annecy is a smaller town in between Lyon and Geneva but is extremely beautiful.
How do you think the intersections of your identities and values impacted your study abroad experience? Do you have any tips to share with future study abroad students?
I think being able to speak Spanish allowed me to greater immerse myself. I think anyone going abroad should try to learn as much of the language as possible.
Could you articulate one personal/professional/academic goal you achieved while abroad?
I had a goal of taking at least one course in Spanish. This is something I wasn’t super confident about, but am ultimately glad I did. This allowed me to interact with Spanish students and get the full experience.
What advice would you like to give to future study abroad students?
I would tell them to take advantage of being abroad. It goes by so fast so do everything you can and explore!
