What was your favorite place that you traveled to or an activity you did while abroad?
My favorite place that I traveled to was Hyeopjae Beach in Jeju Island. Even though I have been to many beaches in the United States, this one felt different, similar to my birthplace because of the nature surrounding it, the unique volcanic rocks and some locals picking seaweeds from the shore. The beach and air felt refreshing and I love how the sand felt under my feet.
How do you think the intersections of your identities and values impacted your study abroad experience? Do you have any tips to share with future study abroad students?
This is an Asian country and I was born and raised in Burma for half of my life, there were no major impacts in regards to my identity. However, sometimes I forget everyone in the program has different religions, and not all may be okay with my values and the way I act.
Could you articulate one personal/professional/academic goal you achieved while abroad?
One of the personal goals I achieved while abroad is understanding the structure of the healthcare system in South Korea and the United States and how both countries operate them. For example, South Korea is practicing universal healthcare which means everyone in the country, including foreigners who lives in the country for more than six months has health insurance, and taking care of one's health is seen as a right by the government. The United States sees health as a way of making profits.
What advice would you like to give to future study abroad students?
Advice I would like to give to future study abroad students will be to explore on their own, do not rely on others for everything like figuring out transportation. There are a lot of things to do, and if you are not comfortable traveling alone, find a buddy and share your plans with them and if they would be free to go with you.
Plan accordingly, like not putting assignments last minute. I kept pushing my signature assignment that I could not enjoy myself on the last day of the program we had together.
