How did you decide on your study abroad country/program?
I looked at the different study abroad opportunities through Hutton, and landed on Memory, History, and Identity in Europe. I was drawn to this course because I don't know much about European history and want to know more, and because I have never been to Europe or outside of North America.
What were you nervous about before your program?
I was nervous about making friends. I didn't know anyone going in to the trip, so I was worried I would be lonely if I couldn't make friends quickly.
What were your favorite activities while you were abroad?
One of my favorite activities was riding the subways in different countries. I have never seen public transportation on such a massive scale, and I really wish we had transportation like that in Indiana.
How do you think the intersections of your identities impacted your study abroad experience?
As a queer student, I found it interesting to see how the queer community was represented in different places. For example, in Berlin, I saw queer couples all around. In Budapest, where the government is more conservative, I saw less queer representation.
What is one goal you achieved while abroad?
One personal goal I had was to feel comfortable navigating a completely unfamiliar place on my own. It took some getting used to, but I eventually (somewhat) found my way around and felt comfortable in the places I was.
What advice would you give to future study abroad students?
Pack lightly and be open to trying new things!
What do you wish you knew before studying abroad?
I wish I had brought a little more spending money with me.
