Exploring ancient civilizations in Greece

Saturday, May 15, 2021

How did you decide which country/program to study abroad in?

I focused on what I wanted to get out of the program and what would work toward my studies. This lead me to choosing Greece as I could focus on my studies in archaeology.

What were you excited about and/or nervous about before your program?

I was very excited to make new friends and visit some place new. Along with this I was excited to work on my first excavation site and restoration. I was very nervous before starting the program that I would have a hard time adjusting to the time difference and culture shock but in the end it turned out fine.

What was your favorite place that you traveled to or an activity you did while abroad?

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit a few different islands while in Greece my favorite was Ios because my friends and I all took a group trip over the weekend and went exploring. We got to go cliff jumping and my favorite activity was watching my friend Eon play guitar with some of the locals while my other friends and I danced.

How do you think the intersections of your identities and values impacted your study abroad experience? Do you have any tips to share with future study abroad students?

I think my beliefs in values ultimately made my experience better while studying abroad because holding on to them helped me find friends that fit with me and helped me stay true to who I am. I will say that I am a vegetarian and it was difficult at times to find food that I could eat but only on the smaller islands. For some tips I would say try to find friends that have similar values to you not necessarily religious but more morally. I would also recommend packing light because you will end up buying clothes wherever you go. I also got some small souvenirs such as rings and bracelets which are easy to bring back but still meaningful. If possible I also think it’s great to have a camera one you whether it’s digital or disposable. I loved having a camera with me and I got so many great shots of my friends and our adventures.

What advice would you like to give to future study abroad students?

I would say to take lots of pictures for one, pack light but make sure to bring all your necessities. Be mindful of the locals and make sure to respect their space and practices. And most importantly make friends and go on little adventures.
